iPhone Update To Kill Unlocked iPhones

/ 24 September 2007

This afternoon Apple issued an announcement that they’ll release a software update later this week to kill the iPhones that have been unlocked. The update will primarily consist of new firmware that will “brick” (as put by ARS Technica) all iPhones that have been unlocked for any GSM SIM card other than the ones that the iPhones ship with. They say that:

"Apple has discovered that many of the unauthorized iPhone unlocking programs available on the Internet cause irreparable damage to the iPhone's software, which will likely result in the modified iPhone becoming permanently inoperable when a future Apple-supplied iPhone software update is installed,"

So, the bottom line is that all iPhone owners who’ve unlocked their iPhones should not take this upcoming software update. Possibly in the next few weeks (pre or post 10.5) those developers of the unlock software will write un-unlock software to enable all iPhone users to take this upcoming update. Enjoy, Alex.
