Solar System Chart

Jupiter is the fifth planet in the solar system. It is the first planet in the outer solar system. The asteroid belt marks the inner and outer solar system. It goes around the sun in an oval orbit. It is about 500 million miles away from the sun. Sometimes it is closer to the sun, but sometimes it is further away from the sun.

What is Jupiter Made Of

Jupiter is made of hot gasses. There may be a rock core, but we are not positive. If someone were to go to Jupiter and take off their space helmet they probably would die and be bombed against the core. Jupiter is orangish, redish, and yellowish. The reason it is different colors is because of different kinds of clouds. The clouds of Jupiter are made of 90%Hydrogen and 10 %Helium. All day long there are very big storms on Jupiter. Jupiter outweighs all the other planets in the solar system combined. The atmosphere is composed of tiny Methane,Ammonia, Phosphine, Water,Acetylene, Ethane, Germanium, and Carbon Monoxide. That means if you lived on Jupiter you would die.

About the Red Spot

The red spot is like a bad storm on Earth. Imagine if you lived on Jupiter and that storm lasted your entire life! The red spot can swallow many Earths. Would you like it if you got pulled into the red spot, I wouldn’t.

The Ice Moon and Three Others

Io, a moon of jupiter
Io has volcanoes on it. It’s surface is Yellow-Orange.It‘s diameter is 1,945 miles. It has sulfer.

The ice moon of Jupiter
It ‘s name is Europa. Europa’s diameter is 1,945 miles. There may be a ocean under the ice but we don’t know that for sure. It takes Europa 3.55 days to orbit Jupiter,at a distance of 416,900 miles.

Callisto, a moon of Jupiter
Callisto takes 16.7 days to orbit Jupiter,at a distance of 1,170,000 miles. It was discovered by the Italians in 1610.

Ganymede,a moon of Jupiter
Ganymede’s orbit length is 1,070,000 km from Jupiter. It’s diameter is 5262 km. It’s mass is1,48e23 kg.

The Comet Hit

The comets name is Comet Shoemaker Levy 9. It was discovered by Eugene, Carolyn,
Shoemaker, and David in 1993. It made 2 tiny holes and 1 big hole in Jupiter’s atmosphere. You could see the places the comet hit for nearly a year after the event.
It broke up into at least 21 separate parts which spread out several million kilometers along its orbit. It hit Jupiter in 1992.

Exploring Jupiter

Pioneer 10 And 11

Pioneer 10 got t o Jupiter in 1973. Pioneer 11’s last communication with Earth was November 1995. Pioneer 11’s power supply is dead now. Pioneer 10 was the first probe to go to the outer planets. Pioneer 10 showed the answer to getting through the asteroid belt safely.

Voyager 1

Voyager 1 launched September 5,1977 and got to Jupiter March 5 1979. It discovered that Jupiter’s atmosphere moves around in complicated swirling.
