Solar System Chart
Jupiter is the fifth planet in the solar system. It is the first planet in the outer solar system. The asteroid
belt marks the inner and outer solar system. It goes around the sun in an oval orbit. It is about 500 million miles
away from the sun. Sometimes it is closer to the sun, but sometimes it is further away from the sun.
About the Red Spot
The red spot is like a bad storm on Earth.
Imagine if you lived on Jupiter and that storm lasted your entire life! The red spot can swallow many Earths.
Would you like it if you got pulled into the red spot, I wouldnt.
Callisto, a moon of Jupiter
Callisto takes 16.7 days to orbit Jupiter,at a distance of 1,170,000 miles. It was discovered by the Italians
in 1610.
Ganymede,a moon of Jupiter
Ganymedes orbit length is 1,070,000 km from Jupiter. Its diameter is 5262 km. Its mass
is1,48e23 kg.
The Comet Hit
The comets name is Comet Shoemaker Levy 9. It was
discovered by Eugene, Carolyn,
Shoemaker, and David in 1993. It made 2 tiny holes and 1 big hole in Jupiters atmosphere. You could
see the places the comet hit for nearly a year after the event.
It broke up into at least 21 separate parts which spread out several million kilometers along its orbit.
It hit Jupiter in 1992.
Exploring Jupiter
Pioneer 10 And 11
Pioneer 10 got t o Jupiter in 1973. Pioneer 11s last communication with Earth was November 1995.
Pioneer 11s power supply is dead now. Pioneer 10 was the first probe to go to the outer planets. Pioneer
10 showed the answer to getting through the asteroid belt safely.
Voyager 1
Voyager 1 launched September 5,1977 and got to Jupiter March 5 1979. It discovered that Jupiters
atmosphere moves around in complicated swirling.
